Author Silja J.A. Talvi to discuss book on women in U.S. prisons

Silja J.A. TalviJournalist Silja J.A.Talvi’s book, “Women Behind Bars: The Crisis of Women in U.S. Prisons,” investigates how it is that more and more women are doing hard prison time across the United States, yet there’s been little public discussion about the dramatic increase in rates of incarceration and the impact on our society. Talvi traveled the nation to interview inmates, correctional officers and administrators and to investigate the treatment of imprisoned women.

Ms Talvi will discuss her book on Saturday, March 15 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Olympia Timberland Library. The book will be available for purchase and signing after the talk.

With credits in more than 75 publications, Talvi is an award-winning investigative journalist, essayist, and senior editor for “In These Times” magazine. Among other honors, she received 2005 and 2006 National Council on Crime and Delinquency PASS awards (Prevention for a Safer Society) for criminal justice reporting. Talvi lives in Seattle.
