Company towns in Washington is focus of author talk at Shelton library
Linda
Carlson, author of the book
Company Towns of the Pacific Northwest, will speak at the Friends of the
William G. Reed Library (Shelton Timberland Library) Annual Meeting on Thursday,
April 26, at 6 p.m. at the library. The presentation is open to the public and
is free of charge. It is sponsored by the Friends group. Refreshments will be
provided.
Ms Carlson will share her knowledge about life in Western Washington towns that were built by timber, coal and other companies in the first half of the 20th century. She will also discuss the research she conducted for her book. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.
Company-owned towns were built around an industry. Usually remote and often subject to severe weather, many developed into tight-knit communities with a variety of social and cultural activities. In this informal lecture, Ms Carlson shares anecdotes about daily life in these communities. She describes how the people lived, worked, played, shopped, educated their children and worshipped—and what eventually became of the towns.
Carlson grew up in Pierce County, not far from several former timber and coal towns. She has a degree in journalism and has written several books. Company Towns is her most recent. The author's Web site is www.lindacarlson.com.
