Tree planting and public ceremony slated for Nov. 28 at Hoquiam library parking lot

A tree planting and ceremony will be held in the Hoquiam Timberland Library parking lot on Wednesday, November 28 at 1 pm. The public is invited to welcome a pair of October Glory maples, a variety noted for beautiful new foliage in the spring and striking long-lasting red foliage in the fall. Refreshments in the library will follow the ceremony. The Friends of the Hoquiam Timberland Library paid for the trees and are sponsoring the ceremony. The City of Hoquiam is funding the preparations for planting.

The two landmark cherry trees in the library parking lot had reached the end of their life spans and were infected with several serious diseases. The City that they could not be saved removed the trees in October when it became apparent after two years of effort.

The Grays Harbor Fine Woodworking Guild cut down the trees and will be able to craft objects from the wood. Fruit trees were not chosen for replacements because they would be susceptible to the organisms that had infected the cherry trees and that would be lingering in the soil.
