Uzbek émigré talks on Muslims of the former Soviet Republics

Margaret Hopstein, who immigrated to Washington from Uzebekistan, will give a talk at 2p.m., October 28 entitled “The ‘-stan’ Countries: Is it Possible to Live in Peace?” The program will be at the Tumwater Timberland Library, 7023 New Market Street, Tumwater.

Hopstein explores the factors that have contributed to the recruitment of supporters and volunteers to the Islamic jihad from among the 40,000,000 Muslims who live in former Soviet Republics—Uzbeks, Kazakhs, Kyrgyzs, Chechens, Tajiks, Uighurs. She also discusses the impact of diplomatic efforts and sister-cities programs, using several projects based in Seattle as examples. Throughout the program, Hopstein shares personal experiences and anecdotes.
