Authors at "FinnFest USA ’06" to speak at Naselle Timberland Library
Seven writers who have a Finnish heritage or whose books relate to Finnish culture or history will make presentations at the Naselle Timberland Library Friday and Saturday, July 28 and 29. The authors will read from their works then discuss them with the audience. Book signings will follow each talk. The library is located at 4 Parpala Road, Naselle, Washington.
The presentations are part of the national FinnFest USA ’06 festival being held in both Naselle, Washington and Astoria, Oregon this year (July 26 through 30). 12:30-1:30 p.m., M.E.A. McNeil: "A Mother’s Story: Based on the Lemminkainen Runes from the Finnish Epic the Kalevala," a book of Finnish mythology.
2-3 p.m., Lester Ristinen: "Collectible Knives of Finland," on the types, history and collecting of Finnish art knives from the 1700s to the present.
3:30-4:30 p.m., Robert Michael Pyle: "Sky Time in Gray’s River: Living for Keeps in a Forgotten Place," Pyle’s newest work, a personal observation of the passage of a year in the area.
July 29
11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Brian Atwater and David Yamaguchi: "The Orphan Tsunami of 1700: Japanese Clues to a Parent Earthquake in North America," a transpacific detective story of a historic catastrophe and its present day application.
1-2 p.m., Irene Martin: "Legacy and Testament: The Story of Columbia River Gillnetters" brings gillnet fishing on the Columbia to life.
2:30-3:30 p.m., Bryan Penttila: "Columbia River, the Astoria Odyssey: A Pictorial History of Life on the Columbia River Estuary" shares the everyday and the extraordinary in the lives of both Natives and early settlers.
