Lewis County Reads series to begin at Centralia Timberland LibraryErik Larson

The Centralia Timberland Library will host the two opening events of the April 2006 countywide reading program series, Lewis County Reads: Erik Larson. Lewis County Reads is a community reading project of Centralia College and Timberland Regional Library. National bestselling nonfiction writer, Erik Larson, is this year’s featured author. The initial presentations will enrich the experiences of both reading Larson’s books and visiting with the author later in the month. All events are free of charge.

At Centralia Timberland Library, 110 S Silver Street, Centralia, April 13 and 24:

Thursday, April 13 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., earth scientist Kelley Ward will present "Spin on Hurricanes." Ward’s inspiration is Larson’s spellbinding book about the Galveston, Texas hurricane of 1900, Isaac's Storm: A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History.

Monday, April 24 at 7 p.m., the community can take part in a discussion of The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America. The book contrasts Chicago’s emergence as a great city, the host of the 1893 World’s Fair, with the story of a serial killer operating in the anonymity of a burgeoning urban population and crowds of fairgoers.

At Centralia College’s Corbet Theatre, Thursday April 27:

1 p.m., Larson will discuss how he creates a narrative from factual information.

7 p.m., the author shares his thoughts on the art of researching and writing historical nonfiction. The evening will include book signing and refreshments.
