Flute Player Presents Native American Music of Lewis & Clark Era

Photo of Gary StroutsosGary Stroutsos, one of the world’s premier players of Native American flute music, will perform at 7 p.m., Wednesday, November 2 at the Yelm Timberland Library. In an interactive presentation for teens and adults entitled "Along the River: American Indian Flute Songs," Stroutsos will share music, stories and traditions of the Northern Plains Indians and their perspective on the Lewis and Clark expedition. This program is a Humanities Washington Inquiring Mind presentation. It is free of charge.

The presentation features haunting flute songs from the Hidatsa, Mandan, and Lakota tribes of North and South Dakota. After the presentation Stroutsos will take questions and encourage audience members to come forward to hold and look at his flutes.

Stroutsos’s music was showcased in the Ken Burns PBS documentary "Lewis and Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery." Stroutsos has played at the White House and has recorded over a dozen CDs including the Grammy-nominated "Pacific Moon".
