View Lewis & Clark expedition through different eyes at Yelm library presentation
Storyteller
Antoinette Botsford presents On the Trail with Sacagawea, sharing
myths, legends, and herbal lore typical of the tribes met by Sacagawea,
translator for the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The presentation, geared to a
high school to adult audience, will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 20 at
the Yelm Timberland Library. Sponsored by the Friends of the Yelm Library, it is
free of charge to the public.
The audience will gain a deeper appreciation of the indigenous cultures encountered by the Corps of Discovery and see a viewpoint other than that of conqueror or explorer. Botsford draws from a large number of collected works, conversations with Native tellers encountered throughout her life, and stories that were told during the early 19th century. She explains Sacagawea’s role as a sharer of culture and a finder of common ground, evident from the journals of Lewis and Clark.
A professional storyteller since 1988, Botsford holds a Ph.D. from UCLA in theater history and is chair of the Oral History Project on Orcas Island.
"On the Trail with Sacagawea" is part of the Yelm Timberland Library’s presentation series, Commemorating the Lewis and Clark Expedition. School-age youth and adults can look forward to the program, "More than the Ocean," on October 19, when Allan Hirsch will show the important role played by Native Peoples in the success of the expedition and tell about the plants and animals found along the way.
Both programs are Humanities Washington Inquiring Mind presentations. For more information, contact the Yelm library at (360) 458-3374. Web sites: www.humanities.org/inquiringmind/ and www.trlib.org.
