History buff describes the “Wild West” at Montesano library
Historian Gerald Schaefer will describe the evolution of events that shaped the “Wild West,” from the establishment of the fur trade to the end of the Indian Wars in the 1890s. The presentation, part of the Friends of the W.H. Abel Memorial Library “Lunch for Your Brains” series, takes place from noon to 1 p.m., Tuesday, September 20 at the Montesano Timberland Library (W.H. Abel Memorial Library).
According to Schaefer, President Thomas Jefferson and his cabinet had a nearly impossible vision for the U.S. they referred to as “manifest destiny,” requiring courage and sacrifice to complete.
Mr. Schaefer, who lives in Central Park, is retired from ITT Rayonier and is now a historian of the West. He is also a member of various associations related to his interest and has written articles for their newsletters. His hobby is finding and photographing headstones of outlaws, lawmen, cavalry officers and Indian leaders of the Old West.
The Friends of the W.H. Abel Memorial Library will meet before the presentation at 10:30 a.m. The public is welcome.
