"Herstory": Finding the women in our local history

Though women have always been active in making history in Thurston County, their contributions aren’t always evident in written accounts. Women's roles in their homes or behind the scenes are often overlooked when communities write their histories. With three free presentations this month, Shanna Stevenson of the Thurston County Historic Commission and author of "Olympia, Tumwater, and Lacey: a Pictorial History," will tell "herstory" to help us find the women in our local history.

Saturday, March 12, 1-2 p.m.: "Women in Lacey History" at Lacey Timberland Library, 500 College Street SE, Lacey; (360) 491-3860. Sponsored by the Friends of the Lacey Timberland Library.

Thursday, March 24, 6-7:30 p.m.: "Tumwater Women in History" at Tumwater Timberland Library, 7023 New Market Street, Tumwater; (360) 943-7790.

Saturday, March 26, 2-3:30 p.m.: "Women’s Suffrage in Olympia" at Olympia Timberland Library, 313 8th Avenue SE, Olympia; (360) 352-0595.

For more information, visit the Timberland Regional Library Web site at www.trlib.org; call your local library; or pick up a copy of the current "Adult Events" brochure at any Thurston County Timberland library.
