Carl Allen presents songs of the Great Depression at Westport Library

Folksinger and songwriter, Carl Allen, sings and tells anecdotes in his program "The Great Depression: Hard Hitting Songs for Hard Hit People" at 7 p.m. Thursday, September 16 at the Westport Timberland Library. This is a presentation from Humanities Washington’s Inquiring Mind series. It is about an hour long and includes time for audience participation.

Allen sheds light on how the Great Depression of the 1930s turned the lives of ordinary people upside down in a way not seen before or since, shaping the nation's psyche and indelibly marking the lives of everyone who lived through it. Stories and songs about the Great Depression abound and form part of the heritage of the Northwest. This presentation is about those stories and songs.

Allen began singing folk music during the 1960s, and has sung at a variety of venues and on radio and television. He provided the musical sound track for three public television documentaries: "The River," about life along the Columbia, "Rainier, the Mountain," for the 100th anniversary of Mt. Rainier National Park, and "Exceptional People: Emmett Watson," about the late Seattle newsman. Allan is also well versed on Woody Guthrie and his music.

The Westport Timberland Library is located at 506 N Montesano Street, Westport. For more information, please call the library at (360) 268-0521.
