At Tumwater Library this Thursday: Brian Pertl to play, discuss Didjeridu
Ethnomusicologist
Brian Pertl will explore the role of the didjeridu in Australian Aboriginal
society, as well as the instrument’s rise in the contemporary world music scene,
in a free public presentation, "Didjeridus, Discos, and Dim Sum: How the World
Fell in Love with a Termite-hollowed Log," at 6 p.m. Thursday, October 28 at the
Tumwater Timberland Library.
Through demonstration and audience participation Pertl will show exactly what goes into good didjeridu playing. Pertl will trace the relationships between tradition and cultural change and the differences between traditional and nontraditional playing. He will also show how the didjeridu has joined the global mainstream, though it was virtually unknown outside of Australia only 15 years ago.
The Friends of the Tumwater Timberland Library is sponsoring this Humanities Washington Inquiring Mind presentation. The library is located at 7023 New Market Street. For more information, call 943-7790.
