Join April 3 Arbor Day celebrations at Tumwater Library, pick up free tree seedling

The Tumwater Timberland Library and the Tumwater Tree Board are presenting Tumwater Arbor Day festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday April 3 at Tumwater Timberland Library. This celebration of trees and learning is an annual event with activities and displays for all ages.

The Tumwater Timberland Library is located at the corner of Israel Road and New Market Street. For more information, call the library at 943-7790.

Tumwater Arbor Day Festivities:

10 a.m. The Tumwater Tree Board will give away free tree seedlings while they last.

10:30 a.m. Story time for families will include Arbor Day stories, songs, action rhymes and simple craft.

11 a.m. A gingko tree will be planted on the library grounds and dedicated as a symbol of life long learning.

11:45 a.m. Ben Thompson from the Department of Natural Resources will speak on the Western Hemlock, the state tree of Washington.

Noon-3 p.m. Arbor Day Hats: All ages can drop by the meeting room to find all the supplies needed to make a hat to wear on Arbor Day.

All day: A display case will have tree-related items and a bulletin board will sport a creative and lively tree theme. Adult and youth materials about trees will be gathered together for library cardholders to borrow.

Arbor Day Fun Facts

National Arbor Day is the last Friday in April but many states observe Arbor Day on different dates according to their best tree-planting times.

Washington’s Arbor Day is the second Wednesday in April, this year, April 14. Website for more information: www.dnr.wa.gov/arbor/

According to the National Arbor Day Foundation, over the course of 50 years, that single tree you planted can potentially generate $31,250 of oxygen, provide $62,000 worth of air pollution control, recycle $37,500 worth of water, and control $31,500 worth of soil erosion.
