Olympia library hosts talk on First Peoples and Civilized Cultures
Roger Fernandes of the Lower-Elwha Band of S'Klallam Indians will discuss how tribal cultures worldwide are challenged to maintain their cultural integrity in the face of interactions with technologically driven cultures. The presentation, titled "Savages and Civilization: First Peoples and Civilized Cultures," will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 29 at the Olympia Timberland Library, 313 8th Avenue SE, Olympia. Time for discussion will be included.
Fernandes will focus mainly on indigenous people of the Puget Sound region, looking at how their traditional cultures have been challenged, changed, and in some cases destroyed by what others have called progress. Fernandes is an artist and educator who works to bring attention to the uniqueness and spirituality of the Puget Salish art and culture.
This is a Humanities Washington, Inquiring Mind series presentation. It is being sponsored by the Friends of the Olympia Timberland Library and is free of charge. For more information, call the Olympia Timberland Library at (360) 352-0595.
