Award-winning Journalist & Author, David Neiwert, to Speak at Aberdeen Library
Freelance journalist and author David Neiwert will discuss the writing of his
latest book, “Death on the Fourth of July: The Story of a Killing, a Trial, and
Hate Crime in America,” and the issues it raises, in a talk for teens and adults
at the Aberdeen Timberland Library. The presentation will be from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
Saturday, November 13. After the program, Neiwert will be available for book
signing.
In “Death on the Fourth of July,” Neiwert explores an incident that occurred July 4, 2000 in Ocean Shores, Washington—an attack on three Asian American men, the death of one of the attackers, and the murder trial of one of the intended victims. In alternating chapters, Neiwert synthesizes experts’ information on the history, myths, and legal issues surrounding bias-motivated crime in America, especially in our small rural towns.
Neiwert is a fourth-generation Northwest native and a veteran reporter and editor. His work has appeared in The Washington Post, MSNBC, Salon.com, the Southern Poverty Law Center Intelligence Report, and numerous regional publications. His reportage on domestic terrorism for MSNBC won a National Press Club Award in 2000 for distinguished online journalism. Currently he edits the Weblog Orcinus. He is also the author of “In God’s Country: The Patriot Movement and the Pacific Northwest.”
The event is being sponsored by the Friends of the Aberdeen Timberland Library. For more information, people may call the library at (360) 533-2360.
