Now You Can Chat Online with Timberland Reference Librarians
The public is invited to try out Timberland Regional Library’s newest reference and information service—Internet chat. Launched in July, "Reference Chat" is the latest addition to TRL’s suite of public information services.
It provides another way for the public to ask questions and receive information from Timberland’s central reference librarians besides telephoning, e-mailing or visiting the library. The service provides answers to factual questions, gives help finding information, and/or gives referrals to online or print resources or other agencies. The library is piloting the service from 2 to 4 p.m., seven days a week except holidays, and expects to add hours in the future. "We know that when kids are back in school, they’ll love using chat, but we especially want to reach out to seniors and to individuals with limited mobility, and help them extend their access to their communities and the world," said Timberland’s Reference and Adult Services Coordinator, Liz Stroup.
Using reference chat:
Log on to the TRL site at www.trlib.org, and click on "Ask A Librarian," then "online chat."
Type in your name and e-mail address (both optional). If you provide an e-mail address, the transcript of your chat session is automatically e-mailed to you after the session is ended.
Other ways to reach TRL’s central reference librarians:
E-mail Ask A Librarian via the TRL Website 24 hours a day.
Telephone 704-INFO (704-4636) from the Olympia area or 1-800-562-6022 from all other areas in Grays Harbor, Lewis, Mason, Pacific and Thurston counties.
Hours: Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday, 1-5 p.m.
TRL reference and information services are free of charge to all residents of the five counties.
Timberland Regional Library serves Grays Harbor, Lewis, Mason, Pacific, and Thurston counties at 27 community libraries and 6 school-based cooperative library centers. Anyone needing special accommodations to participate in a library’s program may contact the library 4 days in advance.
