World Music Expert Brings Brass Band Lecture to Hoquiam Timberland Library
Brian Pertl, musician and world music expert, presents a spirited lecture and demonstration, The Oompah Heard Around the World: How the Lowly Brass Band Changed the World’s Music, at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 8 at the Hoquiam Timberland Library, 420 7th Street. The presentation is free of charge and intended for an elementary school through adult audience.
Pertl (left) explores
the history of brass instruments, the importance of the brass band in American
music, and how the brass band was adopted and adapted by other cultures. He
plays recordings of brass band music from various parts of the world, including
Ghana, Surinam, Indonesia, Bulgaria and the Andes Mountains. Pertl also
discusses the interaction between music and culture and the sense of power and
freedom that the brass band conveys.
Pertl has taught ethnomusicology at the University of Washington, covering such subjects as American popular music, African American music, and Anglo-American music. He presents public lectures on Aboriginal music of Australia, sacred music of Tibet, and other world music.
The presentation is sponsored by the Friends of the Hoquiam Timberland Library. For more information, people may call the library at 532-1710.
