Naturalist and Author Robert Michael Pyle
Speaks at Aberdeen Timberland Library’s Winter Lecture Series
Writer and biologist Robert Michael Pyle will present a colorful slide talk, "Butterflies of Cascadia: Getting to Know the Bright Wings of Summer," from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, February 23 at the Aberdeen Timberland Library. The presentation is the second in the library’s monthly Winter Lecure Series. Dr. Pyle will address both the factual and esthetic sides of butterflies including their fascinating life history, ecology, lore, and poetics. All ages can learn how to find, approach and enjoy butterflies, and how to encourage them to come to a garden. Questions will be welcomed.
Dr. Pyle’s newest book, Butterflies of Cascadia, is the first complete field guide to all the butterflies of the Pacific Northwest. A multiple award-winning professional writer since 1982, Pyle has written fourteen books and hundreds of papers, essays, stories, and poems. Several of his books will be available for purchase and signing.
Dr. Pyle earned his Ph.D. in butterfly conservation ecology from Yale University in 1976. He has worked as butterfly conservation consultant for the government of Papua New Guinea, as Northwest Land Steward for The Nature Conservancy, and as visiting professor or writer-in-residence at many colleges and universities. He has lectured and taught all over the U.S., and appeared on NPR's E-Town and All Things Considered as well as Good Morning America. A lifelong conservationist, he received a 1997 Distinguished Service Award from the Society for Conservation Biology.
