Author Russ Hulet Talks about Bear Hunter "Big Bill Hulet"

Author and journalist Russ Hulet will speak on his new book, (May, 2003) "Born Under a Stump: The Life and Legend of Big Bill Hulet," at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 24 at the Aberdeen Timberland Library, 121 E Market Street. The book is a biography of Russ Hulet’s legendary bear-hunting uncle, Bill. The author will give a short talk and answer questions. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.

Bill Hulet hunted on the Olympic Peninsula during the era of old growth logging. He worked for tree farmers and various timber concerns to thin the black bear population. Hulet died in 1976.

Russ Hulet is a prize winning journalist whose work has appeared in regional and national publications. Retired as a teacher and the chair of the Journalism Department at Pierce College in Tacoma, Hulet’s career spans over 40 years. Hulet was a 1949 graduate of J.M. Weatherwax High School in Aberdeen. He now lives in Olympia.
