How Do I Write a Resume if I've Never Had a Job?

You can write a resume, because you have knowledge, skills, experiences, and interests that transfer into the world of work. Use this worksheet to brainstorm your abilities and to organize them into a resume. And when applying for jobs, bring this information with you so that you can fill out applications more easily.

Classes
. What you’ve learned in English, Math, computer science, art, world languages, and other classes helps to prepare you for the ongoing demand for good employees. What classes have you taken that could apply to the workplace?

Tools and Equipment I Can Use. You’ve learned to use tools and equipment at home, at school, and elsewhere in order to get things done. Here’s where you list photocopier, computer, lawn mower, telephone, household appliances, or other tools and equipment that you know how to use.

Special Certification. If you have taken a class and been certified to provide First Aid, CPR, Babysitting, Lifeguard, or other services, here’s where you list them.

School Activities and Community Organizations. Sports, band, clubs, newspaper, yearbook, and other activities help to prepare you to work with other people to achieve excellent results. What activities at school and in the community have you been involved in?

Volunteer and Community Service Positions
. As a volunteer, you bring knowledge, skills, and commitment to an organization. Where have you volunteered, and what did you do?

Hobbies and Interests
. Many hobbies and interests transfer directly into the workplace. How do you like to spend your time?

References
. List three people—not relatives—who can speak on behalf of your knowledge, skills, and experiences. Examples: volunteering supervisor, church or community group coordinator, parent who employed you as a babysitter, neighbor whose garden and/or pets you cared for, teacher, coach, student group adviser, etc.

Okay, now it’s time to organize your knowledge, skills, and experiences into a resume. Here’s a way to write it.
