Nineteen Minutes

Author:

Jodi Piccoult

Review:

I loved this book for several reasons. Though it tells the very serious story of what led one character to commit a school shooting that ended with ten people dead and another nineteen wounded, the entire book isn't just about death and the sadness that it caused. This novel is so much more than that. It is romance, friendship, fitting in at high school, discovering the difficulty in juggling raising a teenager and balancing a job, and so much more. The characters, though they ranged greatly in age, all had the common struggle of trying to fit in with family, friends, and society. It also teaches how quickly one's life can change; in nineteen minutes, one can fold laundry for a family of five, drive to the grocery store, or even check their e-mail, yet in nineteen minutes everything you once held dear could be gone. There's no way I'll ever forget reading this book!

Straydog

Author:

Kathe Koja

Review:

This book is for anyone who ever wanted to be a vet, anyone who ever cried while watching an A.S.P.C.A. show, anyone who ever begged their parents to keep a stray animal. But most of all it's for all the misfits, for all of those who are afraid to love, afraid of the consequences of being open and being yourself. I've read it half a dozen times in the past couple years and i've been meaning to write a review for it for a while now. It's a good book, good being an understatement.

Great Expectations

Author:

Charles Dickens

Review:

Great Expectations tells the story of Pip, an orphaned boy who lives with his sister and brother-in-law, Joe, the blacksmith. In his early years he is happy in his home, despite his sister's anger, and looks forward to the time when he shall become apprenticed to Joe. But when he grows older, he is summoned by Miss Havisham to her manor house. He is tormented by the beautiful and cruel Estella, with whom he falls in love. Estella's stinging words towards Pip soon make him ashamed of his poor family and his ignorance, and he passes years in discontent, until, one day, he is informed that he has come into possession of "great expectations." He is to move to London, and always to keep the name of Pip, and someday, his benefactor will reveal him/herself... This is an amazing book. The plot is gripping, and it's great fun to watch the puzzle pieces come together in the end. The style is not so hard to understand as one might fear, and Dickens has a wonderful, dry sense of humor that makes the book a delight to read.

Review:

This book was totally amazing. It is about a girl who's mother has cancer and her father is always with her mother so she is alone. She meets a boy in the park and he is a vampire. He needs her help to defeat his brother. This is a great book. I couldn't put it down. I can kinda relate to the parents part but not so much to the vampire part. This is a great book and a quick read only 198 pages. This author has also written Blood and Chocolate. Another great book.

New Moon

Author:

Stephenie Meyer

Review:

This book was just as good as the first. Edward does something he regrets and now Bella is left to deal with the worst problem ever. When she puts her life in the hands of Jacob Black, things get bad. He's the only one Bella has left and now things get worse. Another vampire is after Bella and she only has Jacob. When Bella does something to upset Edward, she goes to save him from something terrible. Is there enough time? The ending was my absolute FAVORITE part in the book. Read the book, it's just as awesome as Twilight.

Twilight

Author:

Stephenie Meyer

Review:

This book IS the best. When Bella Swan moves from sunny Arizona to gloomy Washington, her life takes a huge turn when she meets Edward Cullen. He's irresistible and he's hiding a dark secret from Bella. The more Bella gets involved with Edward, the more she puts herself and others in danger and she doesn't even realize it. Is it too late to turn back? I've read this book so many times I can't count how many. That shows how good this book is.

Princess in the Spotlight

Author:

Meg Cabot

Review:

This book was a great sequel to the first book, The Princess Diaries. Mia writes in her journal, as in the first book, and goes through so many different changes in her life. She records them in her journal. Mia gets an announcement from her Mom that will make her go crazy. She also has to go on live television, which freaks her out! Then Mia gets a secret admirer. Does she find out who it is? Read the book to find out. I really enjoyed this book because of the way Mia puts everything together and how she comments things. I think Meg Cabot does a great job of putting herself in the position of a ninth grader to wirte these books.

the last universe

Author:

william sleator

Review:

I liked the book because the part of this book that I thought was good was the ending, because the characters had to find a different dimension (a dimension is like another universe) where Suzan's brother, Gary, wasn’t sick. Gary was getting weaker and weaker. He thinks that a flower called the lotus has something to do with quantum physics, because at night it goes and like gets sucked in, but while it's daylight it sprouts everywhere. Gary says that lotuses grow only in tropical areas like the Bahamas but then Suzan sees a few of them next to the outhouse that they have, so then Luke (the owner of the outhouse) says he doesn’t know why they are growing there because he claims he has never seen them before in his life. So Suzan and Gary are trying to find out why they're growing there and they both go inside and see a maze behind the garden. They have to find out why the maze suddenly appears there, because they’re curious, so then they take Sro-dee (the cat that belongs to Luke) and they go into the maze. While they are walking the cat Suzan sees that they’re all becoming partially invisible and they don’t know why. Then the cat turned and took them down a path, and then it's like they're in a ghost town. Then they find their house that they live in now and its their great grandfather's house, so they go inside and sit down around these huge round tables with their relatives. And they’re all talking about how it’s a weird dimension thing that’s going on and so Suzan has to write down a physics problem and then they walk back down the path but this time Suzan was scared because the cat just sat down and she thought the cat wasn’t going to move ever again, so she and Gary were about to cry because they don’t know the way back and they think that they're going to die. But then the cat gets back up and takes them home. When they go back home Suzan has to take medicine and she is feeling more weak then ever before and she realizes in the dimension where they now that she is the one who's sick. So I would rate this book at a 4 out of 5 because it was exciting.

Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie

Author:

David Lubar

Review:

This is, like, one of the best books in the world. It's written by David Lubar, the author of Hidden Talents, True Talents, Flip, Dunk, and more. David Lubar is a great author, and I'm reading a lot of his books. But this book is really amazing. It's about a guy who has to try to survive his freshman year in High School. His friends don't like him anymore, and he's all alone. But he makes two more friends--friends that nobody else likes besides him. But they're good friends, and they stick by him and help him take his mom to the hospital when she's having a baby. This is a great book.

The Host

Author:

Stephenie Meyer

Review:

This book wasn't your average teenage book. This was sort of confusing in the beginning but once I understood what was happening, I got totally hooked. Literally. After school I would lock myself up in my room and read until about 10. Anyway, the Host is about a girl named Wanderer who is not a human and is part of an Alien takeover. But when she is put inside of a human named Melanie, she can't control her mind. The aliens are not like the aliens that you would normally see. They are little worm like things that are put into the back of your head and they have control of your body. But Melanie refuses to let Wanderer have full control. But that is the main storyline. But in order to get the details...YOU HAVE TO READ THE BOOK!!!

The Titan's Curse

Author:

Rick Riordan

Review:

This is the third book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. It's not as good as the other two, more like a filler book. It's about Percy Jackson who goes to save his friend Annabeth and the goddess Artemis with his friends Thalia and Grover, and two Huntresses named Zoe and Bianca. Let me just warn you--two people die and one person dangerously runs away. Another falls off a cliff. So if you're not a person for tragedy or violence, this book isn't for you.

Eagle of the Ninth

Author:

Rosemary Sutcliff

Review:

Marcus is a Legionaire in Britannia - a post he's dreamed of getting. His father was the commander of the Ninth Legion - which went mysteriously missing on its last mission. Nothing was found of its whereabouts - even its Eagle was gone. When Marcus's leg is wounded, he's honorably discharged from the Legion, and he goes to live with his uncle. There, he hears rumors that a neighboring barbarian tribe has an Eagle God - and it suspiciously sounds like the missing Ninth Legion's Eagle. Marcus is determined to retrieve the Eagle, and restore his family's honor. The descriptions in this book are amazing, as is the historical detail. The characters are all very memorable and there's lots of action. History and non-history fans will love it.
