Chocolate Sundays

Chocolate lovers of all ages entered their own special kind of paradise-and helped their communities in the bargain-when they joined in the TRL Foundation's Chocolate Sundays events at the Tumwater and North Mason Timberland libraries this September.Photo of Chocolate Sundays participants

The events were designed to announce the Foundation to the community at large, to celebrate with the library district's families, and to raise awareness of TRL's financial needs. In this era of shrinking public funding, Timberland needs help in providing adequate numbers of books, computers, and specialized equipment.

Participants in the Chocolate Sundays learned of ways to help their libraries meet these needs, but attending a philanthropic event can be fun, too-and delicious. Children and grownups constructed chocolate cookie towers, walked for cakes, and tossed bean bag "chocolate chips" into a gigantic cookie. They sampled from table after table of chocolate confections and heard from author Bobbie Hasselbring what many of us have always suspected: chocolate is good for us!

Adults vied for donated delectables and art objects at silent auctions. Open Chocolate Sunday participant photo umbrellas hanging upside down caught envelopes with contributions toward outreach collections for the homebound and isolated communities.

All 27 Timberland libraries took part, filling and raffling baskets of goods and goodies and holding children's art contests prior to the Sundays. Raymond library staff brought Pacific County art contest winners to the North Mason event so the children could see their works displayed and enjoy the festivities.

These complex events with all their planning, setup, and costs-and all that chocolate-were the result of hundreds of volunteer hours and the generous support of the business community. Business sponsorships and donations of prizes and every conceivable manifestation of chocolate were key to the events' success.

The Foundation invites everyone to join these partners in building bright futures through support of the Timberland libraries. As their appeal states,

"Your generous gift to the Timberland Regional Library Foundation will goChocolate Sunday participant photo where the need is greatest: putting books in eager little hands; offering hope to someone who has lost a job; giving a parent the educational tools needed to help the family. Your gift could become a senior citizen's favorite book, a teen's chance to learn how to use a computer-or the smile on a child's face at a special Summer Reading program."

Little hands eagerly dipped into ice cream at a Chocolate Sunday. You can follow up with a longer-lasting gift of books, computer know-how, or a path to a bright future.

Donor's Bill of Rights

Philanthropy (noun) 1. The effort to increase the well-being of mankind, charitable donations. 2. A charitable action or institution.

Giving satisfies a basic human purpose of lending resources to improve the condition of mankind. By giving to the library we exercise our support for the goals, the people, and purposes we believe in.

Most notably among those rights is the donor's right "to be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization's governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities."

"How did the library change your life?"

"My Timberland Regional Library changed my life because it opened the door to a whole new world of knowledge. I can always rely on my library and the librarians when I need to find information on a report for school, or if I'm just looking for information on a special subject that interests me."

Christina M. Andrews, 15, Naselle

Help us share your dream for a brighter future!

Your generous gift to the Timberland Regional Library Foundation will go where the need is greatest: putting books into eager little hands: offering hope to someone who has lost a job: giving a parent the educational tools needed to help the family. Your gift could become a senior citizen's favorite book, a teen's chance to learn how to use a computer or the smile on a child's face at a special Summer Reading program.

I had a chance to meet many of you at our recent Chocolate Sunday fundraisers. If I didn't get a chance to say it then, let me say it now: Thanks for your support. I enjoyed those afternoons, and, from the smiles I saw, a lot of you did, too. The Foundation selected this theme as a way of demonstrating the appeal libraries have for all ages; for chocolate, too, is enjoyed by young and old alike.

People come to the library for many reasons. Once it was to share in the amazing world of ideas offered by all the books on the shelves. But today, it's not uncommon to find that patrons return again and again, and never borrow a book. They may want to use the reference section to find out what auto parts they need to restore their old Corvette; or to do some genealogical research, or to read a newspaper from Portland. Some come to share a story hour with their children. Others, to enjoy an evening with Edgar Allen Poe or Queen Elizabeth, at one of the Inquiring Minds events. And, of course, there are computers and the internet to explore as well.

But to me, there's something even more exciting. Consider Timberland's outreach programs and all the promise they offer. Providing large-type books, books on tape, foreign language books, and Adult Basic Education materials, along with special distribution options, some provided by volunteers, opens the library to even more users.

As President-Elect of the Foundation, I look forward to working with Timberland staff and volunteers, the Friends groups, the trustees and board members, and our community members to raise funds to support this rich variety of programs. Just imagine what those services could be if we, the 200,000 library card holders, would each donate $20 to help prepare the library to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Twenty for the 21st-an endowment for our grandchildren's library.

Together, we can ensure funding for a library system that enriches us all, now and in the future.
