Folklore & Mythology

Aesop's Fables - Online Exhibit
Includes the full public domain texts in html - more than 650 unique fables, indexed with morals listed. Translated by George Fyler Townsend (1814-1900) and taken from the Project Gutenberg texts. Some include images (by Gustave'a Dore) and sound files.

American Folklife Center
The Center's online services include Folkline, updated weekly with national events, jobs, and training opportunities; the Folklife Sourcebook: A Directory of Folklife Resources in the United States, with contact information for archives, graduate programs, public agencies and organizations; as well as full texts of publications, collections online, and a growing list of links to other resources in ethnographic studies. From the Library of Congress, created by the U.S. Congress in 1976 and charged to "preserve and present American folklife.

Andersen, Hans Christian
1805-1875 This site provides a complete list of Andersen's 168 stories, in the chronological order of their original publication. Most of the stories are presented in full-text. A cross reference provides information on title variations and Danish equivalents for each story. Recommended books on Andersen and his work as well as links to other sites are also provided.

Folklore and Mythology - Electronic Texts
An extensive collection of tales from around the world, many edited or translated by D. L. Ashliman, a professor of Germanic Languages and Literature. The alphabetical list has stories in categories.

Greek Mythology
An introduction to Greek mythology, with a section comparing Greek and Roman myths.

Latin and Greek Authors on the Web
Links to relevant on-line resources for individual Latin and Greek authors. Most of the authors belong to the Greek and Roman classical antiquity, but some Christian, medieval and Neo-Latin writers are included as well.

This beautifully designed site explores the history, literature, and folklore surrounding Robin Hood, King Arthur, Hamlet and Macbeth, Blackbeard, Sir Francis Drake, the Three Musketeers, Beowulf, the Vikings, Knights, El Cid, William Morris, and dozens of other characters and genres of balladry, fiction, the arts, and film. The online version of the Directory of American poets and fiction writers contains almost 4,000 names and addresses (including e-mail, if available) of writers and is enough to make this a unique resource. The Literary Links and Great Resources are invaluable for professional and amateur writers and help to make this not-for-profit site one of the premier gatherings of literary information on the Web. Also includes online conferences, literary programs and articles on writing and publishing.

Representative Poetry On-line: Version 2.03
A historical anthology of English poetry, from the early medieval period to the beginning of the twentieth century, which includes about 1650 poems by more than 260 authors. Works are indexed by poet, first line, title, date, and keyword, with a section on criticism rounding out the collection.

Rhyming dictionary
Finds matches to your word and leads to dictionary definitions and thesaurus look-ups. Still no match on orange.

Sonnet Central
Created as a labor of love, for poetry lovers, this extensive collection of English language sonnets can be approached from different points: an alphabetical list of authors, by time period for sonnets from Great Britain, and by geographical area for everywhere else. Also a timeline of writers, pictures, essays about the sonnet form, criticism, a bibliography, and a listening room with RealAudio recordings. Most sonnets use modernized language. Searchable.

Storytellers: Native American Authors Online
The purpose of this site is to "make the writing of modern Native American authors, particularly the poets, both more visible and more widely available." The site includes pages on or links to more than 40 authors. There is also a calendar of appearances by the authors, links to reviews of their works, a section on traditional storytelling, a page of links to the online works of early 20th century native american authors, and another of links to related sites.

This useful guide discusses close to 300 errors and goes on to a page about Non-errors - those usages people keep telling you are wrong but which are actually standard in English, another of commonly misspelled words, and a nice list of other good resources, including one on heteronyms and another on antagonyms.

Copy Editors - THE SLOT
Here you'll find tips and thoughts on everything from word choice to punctuation, from quotations to capitalization, and everything in-between. The heart of the site is The Curmudgeon's Stylebook - an excellent reference source for writers.
