About The Big Read

The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. The Big Read answers a big need. Reading at Risk: A Survey of Literary Reading in America, a 2004 report by the National Endowment for the Arts, found that not only is literary reading in America declining rapidly among all groups, but that the rate of decline has accelerated, especially among the young.  Timberland Regional Library is one of 72 organizations that will receive grants to support Big Read programs between January and June 2007.  We are receiving $20,000 to help support Timberland’s efforts.

This year, our program is called The Big Read: Timberland Reads Together and the book we will be reading is My Ántonia by Willa Cather.  The Big Read web site at www.neabigread.org has complete information on The Big Read and additional information on My Ántonia and Willa Cather.
