A Special Message from Jim Lynch Suggestions for More Reading & Viewing |
|
A Special Message from Jim Lynch When it came to crafting "The Highest Tide," the place came to me long before the characters or the plot. I longed to set a novel on Olympia's bays soon after arriving here eight years ago. When the premise and the characters finally came to me, I realized I needed to know far more about our marine world. So I kayaked, sailed, beach combed and raided Timberland Regional Libraries for books by oceanographers and biologists. From my research and imagination emerged the tale of a tiny observant boy who becomes a celebrity during a summer in which he keeps discovering exotic sea life on the tidal flats near his Olympia home. It's a story about obsession and natural wonder that I hope entertains and inspires. "The Highest Tide" has been translated into other languages and published abroad since it came out last September, but it's the response from local readers of all ages that I've enjoyed the most. The book has been praised by The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times, yet one of my favorite reviews came from the Capital High School Outlook, which said the novel reminds us how spectacular our area is. I'm honored and excited that "Timberland Reads Together" chose "The Highest Tide" for its community reading program because this is where the novel was conceived and staged. And after years of bouncing around the country, this also is the community I care the most about, the place I intend to stay.
