About Timberland Reads Together ![]()
Director’s Message We invite you to take part in Timberland Reads Together, a celebration of reading and community. Join in a variety of book discussions and special events in 27 communities in your five-county library system. All are designed around Sue Monk Kidd’s outstanding bestseller, The Secret Life of Bees. This heartening novel deals powerfully with community concerns and the universal dilemmas of human life, such as the nature of family and home and the need for a sense of purpose and belonging. This “community reads” program series exemplifies the Library’s mission to provide information, resources, services and places where all people are free to read, learn, connect and grow. You’ll broaden your horizons as you deepen your enjoyment of reading. You’ll connect with others in your community as you share your thoughts about the book—its terrific story, memorable characters, colorful setting, and entertaining use of language. And you’ll extend reading into your life as you enjoy some of the special events we’ve designed for you—theater performances, panel discussions, beekeeper presentations and book discussions, some with a “taste of honey.” One-book programs, which have been extremely popular throughout the U.S., were originated at the Seattle Public Library by Nancy Pearl, the retired director of the Washington Center for the Book.
