This past Saturday, a mother and her two daughters saw the Banned Books display staff created near the youth services info desk and it prompted a discussion of ‘Mom, why would they ban Harry Potter?’ The mother brought her daughters (age 8 and 11) to the youth desk and asked staff to share some of the reasons the books on display had been challenged. She then thanked the library for the wonderful display and the opportunity it gave her to talk about this topic with her daughters and for the efforts of the library to make sure books like these is available. They selected 3 of the books from the display for checkout and were *still* talking about the importance of libraries to ‘have books for available for everyone, especially books like these’ as they left. This is the kind of reaction to a display every librarian hopes for!
